Where do I start?

I feel like there is a lot of jumble in my head these days, so many directions my thoughts want to run.  As a left-brained girl, my love of gab and desire for bullet points often collide.  Today let’s make a list.

  1.  Jakob threw his pacifiers in the garbage!!!!  His beloved pacifiers were only allowed during nap and “ni-night” time for over a year now, but he’s held on tight to his love.  I did not hold so tightly to this love of his.   With tears and pained obedience, he threw them away last Thursday night.  It was a tearful night, he sobbed for quite a while.  The next day brought more tears, but after that it’s just been a reoccuring question that he seems okay with the “garbage/you’re a big boy!” explanation.
  2. An odd coincidence?  Two mornings later, on Saturday Jakob woke up with a dry diaper, something we’ve never seen before.  So with a bit of resistance, he finally succumbed to the potty and soon after made his first deposit!  Previously he’s only sat on the potty as long as candy was available and never did anything besides sit and munch.  This epic event has not yet been repeated but I am encouraged that my kid won’t be in jr. high with diapers!
  3. Mercedes has a runny nose.  I don’t know why babies hate their nose wiped so much.  She cries with such offense – as if she can’t believe her mom would do something SO terrible to her!
  4. Jason and I got out the Christmas decor box yesterday and can’t wait for our tree!!! (we aren’t getting it until Dec. 6th)  We didn’t decorate yet (Fall decorations still hang proudly until after Thanksgiving) but we did string some new colorful Christmas lights along our front balcony.
  5. I’m feeling the need for “adult time” now.    Okay, so I usually feel relief and smile when the kids are in bed, settling down for the few hours “sin chicos” each night.  But as Jason asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday (I turned 29 last week!), the main thing that sounded appealing to me, was simply conversations with our friends with no toddlers running around, creating noise, asking questions, and wanting to eat my meal. We had a simple celebration, just as I requested – my favorite two couples came over and we talked, with no interruption! It was lovely.
  6. Another thing, maybe harder for me to initiate, I’m realizing my need for “me time”.  I’ve thought about this a bit since Mercedes was born, but I’ve never done much about it.  So it keeps coming back to me and I realize I need to work on making it a part of my week.  One big reason is so I can have some good uninterrupted time to read my Bible, I need to remind myself of the truth more than ever.  And I’m getting more desperate for the practical direction that is spelled out for parenting and family life.
  7. Am I a busy mom? This morning I brought my kids downstairs around 7 a.m. (after nursing Mercedes around 6, and Jakob climbing into our bed at 6:30) to eat breakfast.  I brought down a diaper for each of them.  I changed Jakob and got breakfast ready.  I realized afterward I still needed to change Mercedes, but I noticed it was a Jakob diaper on the table… where did Mercedes’ diaper go? Oh my!  I had a fleeting thought when I changed Jakob it wasn’t fitting very well – I had put a size 3 diaper on Jakob somehow, I’m not really sure how I even got it to fit at all, he normally fills out a size 6 (the biggest they make them). I made myself smile and enjoyed laughing at my mistake.  A good response, I should try that more!
  8. Christmas!  I’ve been busy planning out presents for all the members of our family – having fun making most of them!
  9. Trying not to get too ahead of myself and enjoy the coming Thanksgiving before fulling diving into Christmas.  It’s just three days away and we’re having friends over (it looks like about 6-8 adults, plus kids, so far).  I love to host parties and one with a huge turkey and lots of stuffing is probably Jason’s favorite kind of party!  We take recipes from his mom and some from mine to help us form our own Thanksgiving meal traditions, it’s a lot of fun!
  10. Painting – we have some painting projects still on the list from our basement remodel (my dad did an AMAZING job and worked so hard during a recent visit building an entire bathroom and remolding the rest into a bedroom) along with the bedrooms upstairs that we want to paint since moving in last Spring.
  11. Laundry,vaccuming, organizing, cleaning, etc.

These are just a few things running through my busy mind this week.  I saw a video on a friend’s blog this morning that I really enjoyed and wanted to share with all my friends also – I hope you enjoy it also!

Oh Beka, I laughed so much about the diaper. It reminded me of a time when I was baking late at night and doing a laundry at the same time. I was baking Zuccini bread and it called for a cup of oil and I picked up the javex bottle to pour in the cup (I didn’t put it in the recipe!) but I was real tired and doing two things at once as I did a lot of then. And I am sure I have said most of the things in that song to my kids (oh the memories it brings back!!) I love your honesty and your blogs. All too soon these days are gone and there are no more diagpers to change or noisy kids in the house. Do make sure you make time for you though and keep filling up with God’s grace because it is out of this that you are able to give and give and give again. Love you.
